Program Overview

The English Language Programme is a preparatory foundation course designed for students who wish to begin an undergraduate or graduate degree at the American University of Malta but do not yet hold a recognised English proficiency certificate at CEFR level B2.

The programme is also open to those who are looking to improve their academic and professional English skills for personal development, workplace communication, or future study plans.

To apply for the English For Academic Purposes Program (EAP), applicants have to follow the steps below:

COURSE STRUCTURE

The curriculum is designed around an interactive, student-centred approach that provides learners with a practical, digital-first learning experience, ensuring both engagement and the enhancement of language skills to build confidence and autonomy in their learning journey.

Upon successfully completing the course and passing the B2 proficiency level exam, students will be awarded a certificate of completion, recognising their achievement and proficiency in the language.

• Duration: 8 weeks each level

• Schedule: 20 hours per week

• Levels offered: A1 – B2

• Assessment: Weekly quizzes, mid-term and final exams.

Key Content:

• Reading

Learn to identify main ideas, infer meaning from context, and analyse structure and argumentation in a variety of texts.

• Writing

Master the organisation of paragraphs and essays, using thesis statements, coherence, transitions, and appropriate tone for university assignments.

• Listening and Note-Taking

Strengthen comprehension of academic lectures and real-life conversations. Learn how to take clear, structured notes and identify key points.

• Speaking and Discussion

Participate in debates, academic presentations, and collaborative discussions with clarity, fluency, and confidence.

• Critical Thinking

Develop analytical reasoning, evaluate different perspectives, and engage in reflective and evidence-based thinking.

• Vocabulary and Language Use

Expand academic vocabulary, collocations, and chunks of language that are essential for academic success.

• Grammar

Improve grammatical accuracy and complexity in both spoken and written English, with a focus on forms used in academic contexts.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The standard English proficiency tests accepted by AUM are:

  • IELTS – 6.0
  • TOEFL – 65
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic) – 48
  • ESB Certificate  – B2

Students who do not hold a recognised certification take an initial placement test (iTEP). Based on the results, students are assigned to one of the English Language Programme levels, ranging from A1 to B1.

This structured placement ensures that each student receives the appropriate support to progress toward achieving the B2 level necessary for enrollment in their desired degree programmes.

TUITION FEES

EAP required for degree-seeking students:

€850 per 8 weeks + €100 admissions fee

Standalone EAP for non-degree students:

€1,200 per 8 weeks cycle + €100 admissions fee

Tuition fees cover all of the following services and amenities:

  • Diagnostic testing
  • B1 Level Test
  • B2 Level Test
  • AUM Library
  • AUM ID
  • Temporary Residence Permit advising
  • Orientation program
  • Course materials
  • AUM email and Internet
  • EAP Course tuition

 

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY

For EAP students, all policies related to regular and excused non-attendance are applicable with the following modifications:

  • If a student is not present at the beginning of the class, they are ‘late’. Being ‘late’ 3 times is equivalent to one absence.
  • Students who are absent for 2 classes will receive an attendance warning.
  • Students who are absent for 3 classes will have to meet with the EAP Coordinator.
  • Students who are absent for 4 classes will receive a failing grade for the class but may need to continue to attend classes to maintain their AUM student status.
  • Students who are absent for 10 classes will be suspended from AUM and may be reported to the Central Visa Unit.
POLICY ON LATE STUDENTS

New students will be allowed to enrol.

If dates of joining are late more than 1 or 2 weeks, and level of the English language of an applicant is low (A1 or A2), then applicants will be informed that if they don’t meet final exam requirements, EAP course studies will be repeated at the next semester.

REFUND POLICY
  • A full refund is available only prior to the first day of class.
  • All refunds after classes have begun are pro-rated.
  • Details will be provided during registration.
  • Diagnostic test fees, tuition deposits are non-refundable.
EAP COURSE MANAGEMENT

If applicants have any questions regarding course content, academic progress and teaching, it is recommended to apply to the Provost or Registrar Office.
