We are the American University of Malta situated in Cottonera, and we are mindful of the need to balance the interests of the local community, our obligations arising from the deed and agreements with the Government, and the concerns of Boat owners and stakeholders. Over the past weeks there has been speculation relating to the illegal berthing of private Boat owners on the quay side of the American University of Malta. We make it clear that our stance is based solely on our legal obligations and liabilities, and that everything being done is to ensure that rights and obligations arising from our agreements with the Government are abided by all those involved, including those relating to berthing of boats.

We are seeking a suitable mechanism to safeguard the legal interests of the University, the Government and all affected parties, and to ensure compliance with the law. In the meantime we will tolerate the current status quo until the matter is resolved. Once a legally suitable mechanism is established to the satisfaction of the State, the local community and the Boat owners, we will make no further comment. Such tolerance must not be taken as giving rise to any rights under Maltese law, and we ask all parties to show goodwill and flexibility to allow a suitable resolution.
